You may not have thought about this previously, but having a project manager on your building scheme, whatever that is and however small it may seem initially, saves you time, hassle and money.
A building project manager fulfils a number of functions, including offering:
- Advice and support
- Insights into saving money, and how to get the best results, for example from a scheme’s layout
- Guidance throughout the whole construction project
- Assurance that your project will be completed on time, to budget and to the highest possible standard
According to construction consultancy CLPM, the overwhelming majority (90%) of unmanaged UK building projects overspend by, on average, 20%. So even on a relatively simple £150,000 refurb or extension, you could find yourself paying up to an extra £30,000 in costs. With a project manager, there are no hidden extras or unpleasant surprises at the end of a scheme.
You also need this service because, don’t forget, reality and computer drawings can differ. So what looks great and works on the screen may not be a viable option in reality – which is where good project managers come in.
What to look for in your project manager
The organisation you choose obviously needs to have extensive skills in and knowledge of building. But, at the same time, they must also be highly organised and project-focused.
You’ll also need to check how long they’ve been in the industry, their insurance arrangements, and ask to see examples of previous work (if only photos), plus references from past customers.
If you choose a building firm to project-manage your scheme, they know their staff and will manage them on site directly. Additionally, they will arrange materials and service deliveries very precisely for when these are needed.
Finally, be sure your project manager isn’t tackling too many jobs at once, especially across different areas, but has the time and capacity to focus on your works.
What we offer at SDS Builders
At SDS Builders, the Hastings-based family firm established more than four decades ago, we provide a reliably efficient, hassle-free service.
We cover a wide range of tasks, incorporating everything from kitchen and bathroom fitting to working on refurbs and extensions. That involves numerous different trades, including painting and decorating, tiling, roofing work and carpentry. Choose SDS as your project manager and you have access to all these activities and more while dealing with just one company. (Even a simple-sounding job can involve many more skills than you may have realised.)
SDS Builders project-manages its own schemes, but also offers this service independently if another construction firm is already doing the building on your project.
We work across St Leonards, Bexhill, Rye, Battle and the surrounding areas. So, for project management just about anywhere in East Sussex, talk to us before you talk to anyone else.
